Department Overview

The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences is an independent research institute within OHSU that is dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. We perform biomedical, clinical, and applied occupational research aimed at promoting health and reducing disease and disability among workers across the nation, particularly in Oregon. The Institute receives its base funding from the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Fund and leverages this base funding to secure additional funding via federal government grants.


The successful candidate will perform animal and molecular biology experiments; draft, edit and submit manuscripts for publication; assist with drafting grant proposals for laboratory funding; draft and submit grant proposals for independent funding; attend regular conference meetings; and participate in all laboratory meetings and group activities.

 

Primary duties will include performing BPA mouse exposure and related tissue molecular biology experiments as part of the Weinhouse Lab’s funded NIEHS R01 project on BPA and liver cancer.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Performs animal and molecular biology experiments.
  • Prepares grant applications, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations.
  • Trains, mentors, and supervises research assistants, students, and junior staff. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. with major training in a relevant field
  • Mouse husbandry and dissection
  • Environmental exposure experiments with mice
  • Molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, Western blots)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in a small group setting
  • Ability to interact in a positive and productive manner with a diverse lab community

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in molecular genetics, epigenetics, or environmental health sciences
  • Next-generation sequencing library preparation
  • Bioinformatics analysis in R and Python
  • Biostatistics analysis
  • Highly motivated and responsible
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to be self-motivated, to prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines
