Department Overview

The mission of OHSU's Department of Neurological Surgery is to deliver comprehensive surgical care for patients with brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve diseases and to lead neurosurgical care through innovation.


Oregon Health & Science University is recruiting for a postdoctoral fellow who will serve as the project leader using human electrophysiology to decode cortical functions and measure epilepsy activity. Experiments are conducted in human subjects with novel ultra high-density biointerfaces during craniotomies as well as with subacutely implanted clinical stereoencephalography electrodes and subdural grids. Facility with programming in Matlab and/or Python is required. Experience with cognitive network research, neural signal processing, big data processing/machine learning techniques, and/or medical image processing would be beneficial. This position would be appropriate for somebody with previous training or work experience in cognitive neurosciences, computational neuroscience, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, physics, mathematics, neural engineering and/or neuroscience. Primary duties will include data collection and analysis, as well as developing scientific ideas, writing grant applications and manuscripts, and management and supervision of research assistants. Candidates should be comfortable interacting with research participants in an inpatient setting. Work will be conducted under the direction of Dr. Ahmed M. Raslan (PI).

Function/Duties of Position

  • Provides research coordination and project management for multi-year research projects, and assists in planning design, procedures and executing research studies.
  • Responsible for training, mentoring and supervising research assistants, students, and junior staff.
  • Preparation of written reports, documents, correspondence, and peer-reviewed publications.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or MD degree with relevant training.
  • Experience performing research in brain computer interface or a related field.
  • Proficiency with computer programming (Matlab, Octave, Python, or equivalent).
  • Ability to function in a clinical environment and gather data from patients.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a small group setting.
  • Ability to interact in a positive and productive manner with a diverse lab community.
  • Ability to be self-motivated, to prioritize effectively and achieve deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing or coordinating a multi-year research project.
  • Experience gathering and analyzing electrophysiologic data.
  • Experience with neural signal processing.
  • Experience applying big data/ML algorithms to datasets.
  • Experience with basic electronic circuit design and layout.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Details

Working hours of this position will vary but are mostly Monday - Friday and 8:00am - 5:00pm with occasional evenings and weekends.
